RACISM, MAFIA ATTITUDES AND ILLEGITIMATE PRACTICES

The observatory on discrimination “Noureddine Adnane” of Palermo, which includes the association Borderline Sicilia and the Arci “Porco Rosso“’s Palermo circle, has published a report that collects some cases of violence and discrimination, including institutional discrimination, which took place in Palermo and its surroundings between November 2017 and October 2018. An appendix to the report also collects cases of episodes of racism, documented by the press which occurred in Sicily in the first year of the government by the Lega and 5 Stelle Movement, showing an alarming increase in episodes of hatred.

IN SUPPORT OF THE SEA WATCH 3 SHIP AND OF LIFE-SAVING NGOS

On 22nd June, at the Court of Catania the conference on the legal case of the ship Diciotti entitled “Contemporary Law: Diciotti case”, organized by Fucina Legale and Borderline Sicilia was held. The detention of shipwrecked people on the ship was an emblematic case of the violation of national and international rules that summarizes the ongoing government propaganda actions. The current case of the ship Sea Watch 3, left at sea for weeks without permission to disembark with 42 people on board, is another example of criminalization of humanitarian aid and NGOs working in rescue at sea.

The paradox is that the arrivals, those not operated by NGOs, continue in silence: 400 people have arrived on the coasts of Sicily in recent days. The mobilizations against the detention of the ship and the arrest of Captain Carola Rackete have not failed to be heard in Sicily and Italy, a grateful and supportive embrace in support of the valuable work of rescuing migrants.
